critical for the governor. let's bring in "news nation" panel. david godfrin, michael and steve daise, conservative radio talk show host. thanks to you for being with me on this friday. steve, let me start with you. these new poll numbers, the head-to-head showing the president now ahead in all three states, north carolina, nevada and new hampshire. new hampshire, of course, romney's home away from home where he has a vacation spot. governor romney's favorables continue to be underwater in all but north carolina now. combine these numbers with what we've seen all week, how worried are republicans? how worried are they that we're approaching the point where it might be time to focus on the congressional races? >> i think people are getting very worried, and i had a pollster doing conservative polling for three decades on my show last night. he said it may be time to go back to a 1996 model of telling the american people, listen, if you're going to re-elect bill clinton, you better have republicans in the congress to make sure to keep him in check. i think it may be a little early for t

. not if these are the policies they're running on. joining me is steve kornacki, co-host of "the cycle" here on cnbc, and democratic strategist, advising wayne powell, the democrat trying to unseat house leader eric cantor. thank you for coming on the show tonight. >> sure. >> great being here. >> good to see you, mud cat. steve, let me start with you. romney's clearly not the best candidate, but aren't his policies, or lack of policies, isn't that what really is dragging him down? >> yeah. i mean, i think he's constrained by two forces here. when you look at the question of policy specificity. the first is sort of where his party is on an array of issues. the republican party sort of, the base of the republican party, and when you look at demands of its candidates is particularly far to the right. the gap between where the republican party is and where the average general election swing voter is, i think is wider than usual this year. so, on any given issue, if romney really expresses the base's message there's going to be a bigger gap than usual between where he is and where the rest of the public

's extremely difficult if not impossible for anyone to win statewide -- >> guest: steve, i disagree with that analysis. abraham lincoln was a third party in 1860. in 1856, you had the democratic party and the wig -- and abraham lincoln wasn't on the ballot in a number of states, particularly in the south, yet he won the election. he didn't win a majority of the popular vote, he won the majority of the electoral vote and in 1832, i would submit that there were two parties there and it was henry clay and andrew jackson and jackson won the overwhelming popular vote. back in 1824, there was certainly several different parties running and then, of course, john quincy adams won that race and that was -- you had at least three, maybe four, parties then. host: but even -- >> guest guest the electoral votes. host: but even if you take it to more recent campaigns, 1968, the caller referring to george wallace did get 46 electoral votes but didn't get close to winning the presidency, ross perot, '92 and '96, getting nearly 20 percent of the vote in '92 but not one electoral vote. guest: he got
